Growing fish in open ponds on land is not new but growing them in recycled water within buildings close to populated centres is a different matter.

This is what our technology partner Fish Protech Pty Ltd., set out to achieve in South Australia during 1989 when it commenced Research & Development of the first commercial scale prototype of the Fish Protech enclosed fish-farm system.

The Company spent the next 3 years at its West Beach research and development facility where it operated and exhaustively tested the system as an environment-friendly grow-out fish farm for Barramundi, a prized table fish native to Australia.

Fish Protech Pty. Ltd.
Growing fish in open ponds on land is not new but growing them in recycled water within buildings close to populated centres is a different matter. This is what Fish Protech Pty Ltd., set out to achieve in South Australia during 1989 when it commenced Research & Development of the first commercial scale prototype of the Fish Protech enclosed fish-farm system. The Company spent the next 3 years at its West Beach research and development facility where it operated and exhaustively tested the system as an environment-friendly grow-out fish farm for Barramundi, a prized table fish native to Australia. Fish Protech had many reasons for engineering such a system but foremost in its mind were:

     • Pollution of the natural environment from where wild fish stocks are harvested,
     • Pollution caused by traditional aquaculture,
     • Pressures on wild fisheries and ever diminishing native stocks,
     • Non-availability of a totally integrated ‘off the shelf’ recirculation package for commercial        fish productions,
     • The long-term sustainability of land-based aquaculture without the use of chemicals or        environmental impact, and
     • Reduced risks for the farmer and to provide predictable outcomes for forecasting        production rates of premium fish to suit market requirements (market driven) and to be        grown close to a distribution hub for large populations.

The Results led to the Fish Protech concept becoming the first Australian designed and manufactured, fully integrated commercial grow-out system. It has a specifically engineered water recirculation system which re-cycles precious water and provides stress-free conditions to grow healthy, pollution free fish without environmental impact.

In August 2002, the system was featured on the Australian ABC Television Program
